Beautiful yarn! I dye as well, but found you through the Mystery Stole list. :)

Hi there! Just ordered a couple skeins of your HP yarn through etsy and thought I'd come poke through your blog. You have beautiful yarns! Perhaps you can offer a suggestion too, if I may. I'm knitting a pair (obviously a pair) of socks for someone for Sockapalooza 4, and the 2 skeins of hand dyed indigo yarn that I'm using are of slightly different dye lots. Would you recommend overdying and if so, how and with what?

Thanks a bunch

Hi Maureen,
it depends on what the yarn content is. The best sort of dyes for a proffesional result are acid dyes which can be bought from loads of yarn suppliers. If you cut about a metre off you can test dye a section and see how you get on.

If using an acid dye, soak the yarn for a good half an hour, mix the dye according to the instructions, place the soaked yarns ( make sure you dye both together ) and cook again according to the instructions, most wool yarns require a cooking time on the cooker of about half and hour. Once cooked allow to cool naturally, once cool rinse untill the water runs clear.

You can go down the Kool-aid route but I would not recommend over dyeing with kool-aid as the result can be unpredictable.

Failing that you can always mix the two skeins up and knit 10 rows of each alternate skein so you will get a pair.
